Rimi Sen, known for her roles in hit films like Dhoom, Golmaal, Garam Masala, and Phir Hera Pheri, was a well-recognized face in Bollywood. Despite her numerous appearances, she gradually disappeared from the film industry. In a recent interview with ETimes, Rimi shared her reasons for stepping away from Bollywood and the details of a legal case she is currently involved in.
Tired of being typecast
Rimi Sen initially found success in Bollywood with several popular films. However, she became frustrated with being typecast, particularly in comedy roles where she felt her contributions were minimal. She said, "Main comedy films kar kar ke thak gayi thi, there used to be not much of a role for me there. Mera sirf furniture role hota tha. I had a good role in only a few, like Hungama and Johnny Gaddaar (2007). The latter didn't work, and that's the kind of work I wanted to do."
Rimi felt that her roles in comedy films were often insignificant and repetitive. This dissatisfaction with the type of work she was getting led to her decision to leave the industry. She mentioned that her life had become monotonous, and she did not enjoy the attention that came with being an actress. Even during her stint on the reality TV show Bigg Boss in 2015, Rimi expressed her preference for staying aloof and quiet.
Disconnection from the Industry
During her active years in Bollywood, Rimi worked with several leading actors, including Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan, Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn. However, she revealed in an interview with Hindustan Times that she is not in contact with any of these actors today. She said "I am not. I can't ask anyone for help. Jab tak gidgidao nahin, help nahin milti hai. Why won't other people look for their own benefit? Why will someone go out of their way to help someone?"
Rimi's statement reflects her belief that in the highly competitive industry, talent alone isn't enough; knowing how to handle people and manage public relations is equally important. She admitted that she doesn't possess the skills for effective PR, which might have contributed to her distancing from the film fraternity.
Legal Battle
Adding to her struggles, Rimi Sen is currently fighting a legal case against a con man who defrauded her of Rs. 4 crores. She shared that the man pretended to be a wealthy businessman and took money from her in 2020, promising to return it with high interest. However, he later made excuses and failed to repay the money. Rimi revealed that a charge sheet will soon be filed in the case.
Rimi's experience highlights the challenges and pressures faced by actors in the entertainment industry. Her story is a reminder of the importance of mental well-being and the need for support systems for artists who often deal with intense public scrutiny and personal struggles.
