REVEALED: “If Lagaan is made today, I would cast Vicky Kaushal as Bhuvan” - Aamir Khan

Aamir Khan has worked in several memorable classics, but one film that stands out in his glorious filmography is Lagaan (2001). It is memorable for its unique subject of a group of villagers learning an unknown game and defeating the champions, the treatment, nail-biting scenes, exhilarating climax, performances, music and also the fact that it was one of the three films of Indian cinema that got nominated to the Oscars. As Bhuvan, Aamir Khan was outstanding. But if Lagaan were to be made today, who would the superstar like to cast? The superstar was asked this question during an interview with Komal Nahta.

During the rapid-fire round, Aamir Khan was asked who he would cast as Bhuvan in today’s times. Without thinking, the superstar immediately said, “I would have cast Vicky Kaushal in Lagaan. I think that he has the quality of Bhuvan. He has dignity, inner strength, steadiness and integrity. He reflects all of that very naturally. He’s also a great actor.”

At another point, Aamir Khan was asked, “If you had to clone an actor and chose an actor similar to you, who would you name?” Again, Aamir Khan answered, “I think Vicky Kaushal. He and I are slightly similar in our energies. I see the same things in him that I see in myself in a lot of ways.”

When asked about his weakness in the same interview, Aamir said, “I am not able to work according to a budget. We had hoped Lagaan would be made in Rs. 12 crores, but its budget ended up being Rs. 25 crores (laughs)!”

He also revealed, “For the first time, a security system, communications system, first AD system, sync sound and one schedule happened with Lagaan. Definitely, all of these things worked and they are the norms today.”
